- continued from No. 405: - Houdini, my rubber eraser had escaped, and I was determined to find him. I made myself a cup of coffee and went back upstairs to look for that one remaining place I must be overlooking. And about 10 minutes later, I spotted it . . .
Between the left side panel of my drawing table and the file cabinet that rests againt it, there is an opening about 3/4 inches wide caused by a molding along the bottom of the cabinet. I took my small searchlight and peeked into the opening . . . Nothing! Houdini was not there! I was stunned! There was absolutely no where else to look . . .
Unless, I thought, as I sipped some more coffee, Houdini had jumped into that opening, rolled along the molding all the way back to the wall, and then dropped down behind the file cabinet! I struggled to move the cabinet away from the wall far enough to look behind it . . . and he was'nt there!
But I saw that the back panel of the file cabinet did not extend all the way down to the floor so I struggled moving it some more until I was able to kneel down behind the cabinet and looked under it. And THERE was my Houdini, he had rolled up against the back of the bottom of the front panel, and could go no further. I reached in and picked him up . . .
He was once a fine, clean, "Magic Rub" Sanford eraser, size 3 X 1 X .5, with sharp edges, and now he was just this little dirty 1/2 inch useless ball. I thought,"Poor old Houdini, no longer will I rub your little head so roughly to erase a line." I bent down and placed him gently in the waste basket.
You probably don't believe this story, but it did happen . . .
